From 15 February until 30 June 2002, The Essl Collection will present the exhibition »In the Blink of an Eye – Photo\Art«
It will include around 85 works from the collection's holdings and several loans, selected by Gabriele Bösch from the perspective of photo/art. Many of the photographic works owned by the collection are now showcased for the first time and put into a traditional painting context, thereby inviting an exciting discourse between painting and photography.
The juxtaposition and association of artistic methods and viewpoints of photographers and painters were the main criteria for selecting the items for this exhibition.
The increasing interest shown by the art collectors in contemporary photographic art in recent years is not only symptomatic of the general trend in art media; that the collection now includes photographic art also shows a complementarity that is in line with a constantly expanding definition of what constitutes an image.
Thomas Struth produces large-format works, reminiscent of the classical, representational painting. Marie-Jo Lafontaine's photos are combined with monochrome painting.
The work of Austrian artist Eva Schlegel constitutes an interaction between painting and drawing techniques with photographic material. Sean Scully's focusing robs building facades of their context, turning them into location-less surfaces that can be identified only through the constellation of doors and windows and their specific colours. These surfaces and colours reappear in his paintings. Further artists featured in the exhibition include: Vanessa Beecroft, Nan Goldin, Ilse Haider, Gottfried Helnwein, Tracey Moffatt
